Success Rates: What Affects the Outcome?

Ovarian reserve, sperm quality, embryo quality, uterine health, body weight, smoking status, medical conditions, and previous pregnancy history also matter. A single IVF cycle may not result in pregnancy, and some patients need more than one attempt.

IVF is generally safe, but it is not risk-free. Possible risks include medication side effects, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, bleeding or infection after egg retrieval, cycle cancellation, failed fertilization, no viable embryos, miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, and multiple pregnancy if more than one embryo is transferred. Many clinics now recommend single embryo transfer for suitable patients to reduce the risks associated with twins or higher-order multiples.
